The first to arrive at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens have been Doña Sofía together with the emeritus, the Infantas and her grandchildren. All of them wanted to accompany the emeritus queen at the funeral of her younger brother.

All of them have occupied the benches on the right side of the Cathedral, unlike Felipe and Letizia. The King and Queen arrived moments later and sat on the left side, as these benches are only occupied by the heads of state of each country. This is the first time that Juan Carlos and Sofia have met officially since the emeritus king left Spain to settle in Abu Dhabi.
